Let me show you these 3, then we will examine each one.

Who is Paul’s Master?
Who is Paul’s Master?
Christ Jesus
Not just Christ - the Messiah.
But Jesus - of Nazareth.
This is what he believed, this is what he proclaimed (Acts 28:23).
Servant
This is what Paul calls himself. He chose this title.
The word could be translated “bond servant” or “slave” meaning someone purchased and owned by another.
This title is the opposite of derogatory to Paul and others (Philippians 1:1; Colossians 4:12; Titus 1:1; James 1:1; 2 Peter 1:1; Jude 1)
Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons:
Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, greets you, always struggling on your behalf in his prayers, that you may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God.
Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness,
James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion: Greetings.
Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James, To those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ:
Because he is purchased and delivered by Jesus Christ from doom and punishment - from sin, death, hell - redeemed - purchased our release (Galatians 3:13; Titus 2:14; Ephesians 1:7).
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—
who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
Because he has something/someone to live for - Jesus Christ - nothing better.
So this title was appropriate and meaningful to Paul and others - and for us as well (1 Peter 2:16; 1 Corinthians 6:19–20).
Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,
20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
After all, didn’t Christ Jesus do this for us? (Philippians 2:7)
but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
This should stir us, not just out of duty, but out of love, to serve Him in return.
He gave His life so that we might have life. It should thrill us to live life for Him.
What is Paul’s job?

Jesus Christ had given Paul a specific role, and this is important to his motivation.
Called
Means summoned or appointed - Paul experienced this.
He was specifically/individually chosen/selected for a specific role/task.
Apostle
Means messenger, delegate - sent from someone to someone
Can be used generally, but usually used specifically
The role was unique (for a specific task/time) because it was someone who...
Had seen the resurrected Christ, and therefore was able to uniquely testify to the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Received their teaching/message directly from Jesus Christ (Acts 1:2–3).
2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.
3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
Performed miracles confirming their message (Acts 2:43; Acts 4:33; Acts 5:12).
And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.
And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.
Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico.
Received their calling to their apostolic ministry directly from Jesus Christ (Luke 6:13; Acts 1:21-26).
And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles:
21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.”
23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias.
24 And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen
25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.”
26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
Jesus Christ Himself identified them - the seal of assurance.
Apostles were basically NT prophets (Ephesians 2:20).

The only apostles are those cited in scripture.
Paul was given this role.
On the road to Damascus (Acts 9, 22, 26). There was no doubt that he was called.
He had seen the resurrected Christ (Acts 9:17, 27; 1 Corinthians 9:1; 1 Corinthians 15:8–10).
So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles and declared to them how on the road he had seen the Lord, who spoke to him, and how at Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus.
Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord?
8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.
9 For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.
He received his teaching and message directly from Jesus Christ (Galatians 1:11-12).
11 For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man’s gospel.
12 For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.
He performed miracles confirming his message (2 Corinthians 12:12).
The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with utmost patience, with signs and wonders and mighty works.
He was specifically called/commissioned by Christ (Acts 26:16-18).
16 But rise and stand upon your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you,
17 delivering you from your people and from the Gentiles—to whom I am sending you
18 to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’
Why is this important? Because Paul had authority given to him by God.
God’s way to deliver God’s truth.
Paul was not just any messenger and this was not just any message.
This is why the Romans should receive his letter/ministry, and to receive it as God’s Word (and so should we).

The gospel - good news...
That God wants mankind to know.
Sourced in Him, due to Him, that which He wants to be know.
Far greater news than any other, because God is far greater than any other.
Paul will expand on this in the next 3 verses.
Who is your master?
Who is your master?
Who or what are you mastered by? Something moves you, stirs you, controls you.
There are reason for how you live.
If you are a genuine believer, then remind yourself regularly of the reasons that you have to serve the Lord Jesus Christ.
